ArtPrize is an international art competition that takes place annually in Grand Rapids, MI. For 19 days, the streets of downtown Grand Rapids are covered in different interpretations of art. These pieces take on a variety of art forms as well including paint, sculpture, film, dance, and many more! This event always takes place right around the same time, end of September-beginning of October. For FIMBA students, this experience would enhance your learning in different cultures and world views. However, best of all, this experience will relieve you from your busy schedule to an afternoon full of new people, amazing art, good food, and hopefully beautiful weather!
The Baling Wire Horse By: Ma son Taylor This is Mason's first year participating in ArtPrize. Mason was raised on a ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. He began baling wire as a child with t he sc raps that he would find around the farm. He would form wire sculptures of the inhabitants of that area; such as, lizards and horses. Since his childhood, Mason has expanded to more exotic animals including lions and rh inos. "Being completely color blind from birth, I feel my strengths include detail and three-dimensional depth in my art," said Mason. His piece can be found at Fifth Third Bank/ Warner Norcross & Judd LLP. Explore Mason's current, past, and painting pieces. |

Self Portrait By: David Dodde David was born and raised right here in Grand Rapids, MI. He specializes in fine art screen printing and works for House Industries. In addition, he works with Bar Fly Ventures as the designer for HopCat and Grand Rapids Brewing Company. He has been involved in ArtPrize since 2012; however, this year's piece was close to home. His father, Ryan Dodde, passed away in December 2013 after struggling with Parkinson's Disease for over 14 years. This image was screen printed using his ashes and silver ink, in memory of his life. Ryan was a coin collector and silver was his favorite precious medal, so the first layer was made of silver ink. The second layer was made entirely of his father's ashes. His father had a career in furniture, so David used a canvas made of wood in recognition. His piece can be found at the Women's City Club. Explore Davids current and past pieces. |
